Add A Gochujang Twist To Everyday Dishes

Thick, spicy, sweet and oh-so-yummy. Just a few words that describe gochujang perfectly. This fermented chilli, garlic and rice-based sauce has been a staple in many Korean households for hundreds of years. The best part? It goes with almost everything and we’re about to prove it to you. Here are a few recipes for you to spice up your usual lunch and dinner ideas.

 

Go Chu Jang-Glazed Salmon

This easy 10-minute Korean-inspired recipe is the perfect weeknight dish. The glaze gives it a spicy kick and is great with other types of fish too!

 

What You’ll Need

1 pound of salmon filets

1 tablespoon of gochujang

2 teaspoons of mirin

2 teaspoons of soy sauce

2 teaspoons of sugar

1/2 teaspoon of toasted sesame oil

1 small clove of garlic

1/2 teaspoon of ginger

 

How to do it

Mix gochujang, mirin, soy sauce, sugar, toasted sesame oil, garlic and ginger in a bowl. This will be your glaze. Preheat your broiler on high and line your broiler pan with foil. Make sure to coat it with cooking oil. Place the salmon on the pan and season with salt. Leave it in the broiler for 2 minutes. Brush the salmon with the glaze and broil for about 3-5 minutes. Place it on a plate and serve with steaming hot rice. You can even top it off with spring onions and sesame seeds for added texture.

Gochujang Peanut Butter Chicken Sandwich

Here’s one for the chilli lovers! This quick combo may seem outlandish, but trust us on this — it’s ridiculously good. This 5-ingredient fiery snack only takes 5 minutes, so it’s great for staving off those mid-day hunger pangs.

 

What you’ll need

2 slices of bread

1 teaspoon of gochujang

1 tablespoon of peanut butter

Poached chicken breast

Sliced cucumber

Coriander leaves

 

How to do it

Slather a generous helping of gochujang on a slice of bread, then add peanut butter on the other slice. Add slices of poached chicken breast on the slice with peanut butter. Top with as much cucumber and coriander leaves as you like, add the other slice on top and serve!

Gochujang Meatballs

Planning a party? Try this recipe. You’re sure to surprise and tantalise your guests’ taste buds with this clever Korean twist to the humble meatball.

 

What you’ll need

3 green onions

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 lightly beaten egg

1 pound of ground beef

½ cup of breadcrumbs

4 tablespoons of gochujang

1 tablespoon of minced ginger

1 teaspoon of salt

½ teaspoon of pepper

2 tablespoons of oil

⅓ cup apricot preserves

1½ tablespoons of rice vinegar

1 tablespoon of soy sauce

 

How to do it

Preheat the oven to about 177°C. Mix green onions, garlic, ground beef, breadcrumbs, ginger, salt, pepper and 2 tablespoons of gochujang in a large bowl. Carefully mix all the ingredients until evenly distributed. Make golfball-sized meatballs from the mixture. Here’s a nifty trick – to get similarly sized meatballs that cook evenly, use an ice cream scoop! Next, heat the oil in a pan on high heat, then place the meatballs in the pan and cook until brown on all sides. Transfer the meatballs onto a baking pan and bake for 10 minutes.

 

Combine apricot preserves, rice vinegar, soy sauce and remaining 2 tablespoons of gochujang in a small pot. Cook over medium heat until the sauce is thickened. Brush meatballs with the sauce and serve! You can also opt to garnish it with green onions and sesame seeds.
