Building the Immune System

Remember the reality TV show, Survivor? In that series, there was always an immunity to win, where a contestant that wins immunity means they are exempted or prevented from being eliminated. Guess what – your actual, physical body needs immunity as well! The immune system has a vital role: It protects your body from harmful substances, germs and cell changes that could make you ill. Think about the COVID-19 pandemic that is happening – having a strong immune system would certainly help to reduce the risk of getting infected.

Kiwi

Kiwis are naturally full of essential nutrients, including folate, potassium, vitamin K, and vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts the white blood cells to fight infection, while kiwi’s other nutrients keep the rest of your body functioning properly. Eating kiwis can effectively ward off infection, common cold and flu when eaten regularly. Side note: kiwis are high in water content, low in calories, and have lots of fibre to help bowel movements. It’s a good option for weight loss.

Chicken

This meat is probably the most universal of the lot and it is actually one that does help with your immune system. Think about it, when we fall sick, chicken soup is what we gravitate to, right? Chicken is high in vitamin B-6, which is an important player in many of the chemical reactions that happen in the body. It’s also vital to the formation of new and healthy red blood cells. Along with other nutrients, it is helpful for gut healing and immunity.

Citrus Fruits

When talking about immunity, citrus fruits are always part of the conversation. Most people hit the vitamin C pills after they have caught a cold because it helps build up the immune system. Almost all citrus fruits are high in vitamin C and with such a variety to choose from, it’s easy to add a squeeze of this vitamin to any meal.

Building your immune system doesn’t seem so difficult when you consider the variety of food that can give you the necessary nutrients. Besides, there are so many ways to spice up your food while still maintaining that dose of vitamins.
