For a Strong and Healthy Heart
July 16, 2020
The heart is probably one of the most vital organs in our body and it shouldn’t come as a surprise to us that we ought to keep it as healthy as possible. The good thing is, there are a wide variety of foods that promotes a strong heart, which means it is not just the regular “healthy stuff. From leafy greens, to tasty fruits and fresh fishes, to even dark chocolate (Yes, DARK CHOCOLATE!), your diet doesn’t have to be dull for you to have a healthy heart.
Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants like flavonoids, which can help boost heart health. One large study showed that those who ate chocolate at least five times per week had a 57% lower risk of coronary heart disease than non-chocolate eaters. It’s worth noting, though, that it’s just by association and not an actual correlation. Ultimately, it’s about moderation. Be sure to pick a high-quality dark chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70% and moderate your intake to make the most of its heart-healthy benefits.
This fan favourite past time snack is more than just that. Edamame, which is an immature soybean, is rich in isoflavones, a flavonoid that may help lower cholesterol levels. This in turn, reduces the risk of heart diseases. Edamame is also a good source of other heart-healthy nutrients, including dietary fibre and antioxidants. Not such a bad choice for a snack.
The antioxidants present in cherries called anthocyanins help in reducing bad cholesterol levels, regulate the blood pressure and fight free radicals that may cause inflammation. This reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. Furthermore, it is also packed with potassium and polyphenol antioxidants, which have powerful heart-protective properties.
Having a strong and healthy heart may not be such a tough thing to achieve anymore, hey? In moderation, all these food suggestions are certainly more than appetising to us and with the right intake, we’ll be doing alright.
