Health is Wealth: Organic Ingredients You Need

February 28, 2019 | Health

In line with our ongoing Health & Wellness Fair, we want to share some of our favourite ingredients to cook with that you can pick up for yourself at the fair! In this blog, we highlight organic ingredients and healthy recipes that are perfect for breakfast, brunch, and dinner, plus the benefits it’ll bring to your health! Let’s begin.

Breakfast for Champions

Blueberries are known for being high in nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin K, and antioxidant levels. Consuming it regularly will help with lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Health benefits aside, it makes for a great topping for breakfast pancakes, and is low in calories too! Make it yourself using this recipe.

A Hearty Brunch

Lentils are part of the legumes family tree alongside split peas, cannellini beans, kidney beans, baked beans, soybeans, chickpeas, four bean mix, lupin, red, green, or brown lentils. Each of which are known for being good sources for iron, calcium, zinc and magnesium. Our favourite to use for cooking are red lentils; its sweet and subtle nutty taste is perfect for beef stew. Make it at home with Jamie Oliver.

Comfort Food for the Soul

Looking for a healthy meal that’s both delicious and refreshing? You can’t go wrong with gluten-free soba noodles. Not all soba noodles are gluten-free, so when you’re browsing for one at the grocery store, be sure to pick the option that’s made from 100% buckwheat with no added wheat flour. Buckwheat contains high levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It’s perfect for improving your digestive system, is a source for protein, and tastes excellent when paired with mango, avocado, and salmon for dinner. Follow these steps to make it at home.

A Refreshing Salad Dressing

Kefir is a fermented drink made using cow’s or goat’s milk. It’s sour and creamy, just like yogurt, and is high in probiotics which is great for better digestion and gut health. There are many ways to prepare it; having it on its own, adding it to your banana bread mix, making ice cream with it. But if drinking it isn’t your cup of tea, perhaps whipping it into a ranch salad dressing might be. Try it at home with this recipe.

Get all of the ingredients for the recipes listed above at our Health & Wellness Fair from 28 February to 15 March at all Village Grocer outlets! Happy healthy eating. We’ll see you in the next blog post.
