We are going further on tackling plastic waste. Starting 15 February 2021, Village Grocer will no longer offer single-use plastic bags at our checkout counters and customers will need to bring their own reusable carriers.
This initiative is a part of our environmental sustainability goal “Plastic Free by 2023” that aims to eliminate all single-use plastic from our business operation before the end of 2023. Thank you for your support.
Besides that, we also encourage our customers to bring their own reusable mesh/produce bag to carry their fresh produce and be rewarded with 20 BITES points. Our S-Meshing Deals is still ongoing till 30 June 2021, where you can get our mesh/produce bag for only RM8.99 (NP: RM11.99) or 899 Bites points.
We are embarking on this new initiatives to eliminate single-use or disposable plastic bags from our stores as they have a severely detrimental effect to our environment and its ecosystem and Malaysia is unfortunately, a major contributor of single-use plastics.
A study conducted by WWF stated in terms of plastic waste, Malaysia ranks the second-highest in Southeast Asia in overall generated waste. According to the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA), the average Malaysian uses 300 plastic bags per year.
This initiative is a part of The Food Purveyor flagship environmental sustainability goal “Plastic Free by 2023” that aims to eliminate all single-use plastic from our business operation before the end of 2023. Join us in this initiative and support our mission towards Plastic Free by 2023!

In January 2020, we launched our “Plastic Free by 2023” pledge to eradicate our introduced single-use plastic from our Retail operations. Today we have already made great strides to reduce plastic packaging around our produce, have replaced the plastic with organic equivalents for meat and fish trays, and are on course for ceasing single-use plastic bags in B.I.G. and Village Grocer saving the dispersion of over 20 million single-use plastic bags a year.
