Living in Malaysia, you may have seen Marmite at home or on menus in local restaurants. But have you ever heard of Vegemite? They look the same, sound the same and some might even say smell the same. But in actual fact, they’re pretty different.

First of all, Marmite comes from the UK and Vegemite is Australian. Tastewise, Vegemite is a lot more savoury compared to Marmite. It has a somewhat smoky flavour to it, almost like beef jerky. Nutrition-wise, Vegemite has less calories and carbs as compared to its counterpart.

So, can we use Vegemite the same way we’ve been using Marmite? Sure. In fact, it might even enhance the taste of your dishes. Not sure what to make with Vegemite? Don’t sweat it, we’ve got a few recipes you can try.


Nothing beats a classic
The most traditional way to eat Vegemite is without a doubt to spread it on some good old fashioned crackers. It might not seem like a lot as a breakfast meal but trust us, this all you need to start your morning right. You’ll need:

Ingredients:
– 1 tablespoon Vegemite
– Crackers of choice

What you’ll need to do:
Making this brekkie treat is as simple as it gets. All you have to do is get a cracker of your choice and spread a small amount of Vegemite on it. Too much Vegemite might make the flavour a little too strong.

It’s pretty amazing that a cracker and a spread can give you all the nutrients you need for a head start in the morning. There’s no doubt that with a breakfast this scrumptious, you’re sure to conquer the day, the Aussie way!

Reinventing the norm
As most of you know, Marmite chicken has become a staple in households and restaurants in Malaysia. We’re going to change it up a little and give the recipe an Australian twist. Here’s how you can make the mouth-watering Vegemite chicken at home! Start off by prepping these ingredients.

Ingredients:
– 650g chicken breast, diced
– 1 tablespoon honey
– 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
– 1/2 teaspoon Vegemite
– Toasted sesame seeds for garnishing (optional)

Marinade:
– 1 teaspoon Vegemite
– 1 tablespoon honey
– 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
– 1 tablespoon rice wine
– A dash of white pepper powder

What you’ll need to do:
You’ll want to start off with the marinade. Mix the soy sauce, honey, Vegemite, white pepper powder, and rice wine in a bowl. Cover the chicken with the marinade and let it sit overnight or for at least 3 hours. Keep any excess marinade because you’ll need it later on. Heat some oil in a frying pan over high heat. Next, stir fry the chicken until they turn light brown on all sides. Then, add in the honey, dark soy sauce, and Vegemite.

Continue to stir fry before adding in the remainder of the marinade. Lastly, let it simmer until the sauce is thickened, dark, and syrupy. Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds on there and serve it with white rice. Lo and behold, you’ve got a scrumptious entrée for the family!

A sweet surprise
You’d think that something so savoury would never be used in something sweet, right? Well, the truth is, with a dash of Vegemite, you can liven up your sweet creations immensely! Vegemite Popsicles for example, are said to taste like salted caramel ice cream. They’re part sweet, part savoury, but all around amazing. Here’s what you’ll need to make them:

Ingredients:
– 2/3 cup caster sugar
– ½ cup cocoa
– ¼ cup honey
– 2 tablespoons VEGEMITE
– 3 teaspoons cornflour
– 1 teaspoon vanilla
– 1 cup milk
– 1 cup thickened cream, whipped

What you’ll need to do:
First, mix the sugar, cocoa, honey, Vegemite, vanilla, corn flour, and milk in a pan. Over medium heat, whisk the ingredients until smooth then bring to a boil. Next, reduce the heat and let it simmer gently until it’s slightly thickened and custard like.

Now that the mixture is done, remove from heat and let it chill in a bowl. Finally, fold the whipped cream through the chilled mixture. Pour the mix into popsicle moulds, freeze until firm and enjoy on a hot day! Alternatively, drizzle Vegemite over your favourite ice-cream and give this sweet-salty combination a try!
