Homemade Purées Your Baby Should Try & Why

As we host the Baby & Kids fair this month at Village Grocer, we thought it’d be a good idea to also highlight one of the more interesting (and tricky) aspects of having a baby: feeding them.

What can they eat since they have no teeth yet? What’s good for them? The answer to these questions are: purées. The blended goods are the holy grail of baby foods. Here are a few of our favourite fruit and vegetable purées as well as their benefits:

Avocados
Avocados are the food staple for millennials thanks to its creamy texture and its health benefits — factors that your baby will appreciate too. It’s rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial properties which helps keep allergies away, and its fats contribute towards building a healthy brain.

For a sweeter twist, try mixing the avocados with bananas.

Spinach
Spinach is packed with numerous nutrients that your baby needs such as vitamins A, C, and K, iron, calcium, zinc, fibre, and magnesium. It helps lower blood pressure, and maintain brain function and mental clarity in a natural baby-approved way. This explains how Popeye managed to stay so sharp for years!

Add potatoes with the spinach for more vitamin C.

Dragon Fruits
contain vitamins B and C, and help strengthen our immunity system. In addition to protecting our bodies from falling sick, it’s proven that the pink and green fruit helps decrease blood pressure and blood sugar levels. So while picking some up for your kid, don’t forget to get a couple for yourself too!

Combine dragon fruits with pears for a fresher taste.

Mangoes
Mangoes are best eaten when chilled on a hot day, but we reckon it’s just as delicious when it’s in the form of a purée too. This sweet fruit helps with digestion as it is a rich source of fibre, and the risk of your baby developing common colds will be lessened the more mangoes they consume because it’s an anti-microbial.

Apples
Apples prevent constipation and help with digestion — which explains the age old saying of ‘an apple a day, keeps the doctor away’ — and this is a lifestyle we can live with. On top of ensuring that our digestive system functions flawlessly, apples are also meant to help improve dental care thanks to its fibre content that helps to clean teeth

Add bananas to the purée to make it even tastier.
